Wallpaper Removal in Lighthouse Point

The short answer

We remove old wallpaper in Lighthouse Point by identifying the paper and adhesive first, then scoring, soaking or steaming as needed while protecting the drywall. Afterward we wash off paste residue, repair damage and prime so the wall is ready for paint or new wallpaper.

Plenty of Lighthouse Point houses changed hands with a decade or two of wallpaper still in place: floral borders in kitchens, seashell prints in guest baths, vinyl in laundry rooms, sometimes three layers stacked on one wall. Taking it down is slow, messy work, and doing it wrong leaves torn drywall that costs more to repair than the removal itself. PrimeWall Interior Solutions strips old wallpaper throughout Lighthouse Point, driving roughly six miles up from our Fort Lauderdale base. We explain here how we figure out what is on your walls, the methods we use for each type, and what we do with the surface afterward so it is ready for paint or new paper.

Figuring out what you are dealing with

The first step is a small test in an out-of-the-way spot, often behind a door or inside a closet. We lift a corner to see whether the face peels off dry, leaving a paper backing behind, or whether the whole thing is bonded tight. Strippable and peelable papers come off quickly; older pulp papers and painted-over wallpaper take much more patience.

We also check what is underneath. If the original builder never primed the drywall, the paper may be glued straight to raw paper facing. That is the most fragile situation, because aggressive scraping will pull up the drywall's own surface.

  • Strippable: face and backing release together with gentle pulling
  • Peelable: vinyl face peels off, a paper backing stays on the wall
  • Traditional pulp: needs soaking or steam to soften the paste
  • Painted-over: needs scoring and longer soak times
  • Multiple layers: removed one at a time, top layer first

Methods matched to the wall

For most jobs we score the surface lightly so a warm water and enzyme solution can reach the paste, then let it soak before scraping with a wide blade held low. Steam is reserved for stubborn, thick or painted papers. It works well, but it adds moisture to the room, which matters in a humid coastal city.

Plaster walls in some older homes tolerate soaking and steam much better than drywall does. On drywall, we keep water to the minimum that softens the paste and work in small sections so the gypsum never gets saturated.

Managing moisture in a humid house

Lighthouse Point homes already live with humid summer air and salt carried in from the water. Adding gallons of stripping solution to a closed room raises that further. We run the air conditioning during and after removal, use fans to move air across the wall, and allow drying time before any repair work starts.

Bathrooms deserve extra attention. If removal reveals dark spots on the drywall behind a toilet or tub, that is often mildew from years of steam, and it needs to be treated and the cause addressed before anything new goes up.

Cleanup and wall repair

Once the paper is off, a film of old paste remains. If it is left behind, new paint will crackle and new wallpaper may not bond. We wash the walls with clean water and a sponge until the surface feels smooth instead of slick, then let it dry completely.

Gouges and torn drywall paper get sealed with a stain-blocking primer before patching, which prevents bubbles in the joint compound. We skim, sand and prime the whole wall so it reads as one even surface. From there you can paint, or we can hang new wallpaper right away.

Before you schedule

Clear small items and art from the room, and let us know about any electrical covers that seem loose. If removal is part of a larger renovation, plan it before new flooring goes down, since water and paste scraps are hard on fresh finishes.

Our removal work also extends to Hillsboro Beach, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Coconut Creek and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

  1. Honest prep advice

If a wall needs skim coating, crack repair or a moisture check first, we tell you before the job starts, not halfway through it.

We decide where the first strip lands so the motif centers on a focal point and the least visible seam ends up in a corner.

  3. Climate-aware materials

We help you pick papers and adhesives suited to humid bathrooms, salty coastal air and rooms where the AC cycles all day.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (561) 823-3201 and we’ll talk it through.

Can you paint over old wallpaper instead of removing it?

It is possible, but seams and bubbles usually show through and future removal gets much harder. Removing it properly gives a better long-term result.

Will removing wallpaper damage my drywall?

Some minor damage is common, especially on unprimed drywall. We work carefully to limit it and repair anything that does happen.

How long does wallpaper removal take?

A small bathroom is often a single day. Rooms with several layers or painted-over paper can take longer, plus drying time.

Do you use steam?

Only when soaking alone will not release the paste. Steam adds moisture, so we use it carefully in humid South Florida homes.

What happens to the wall afterward?

We wash off residue, patch and skim as needed, and prime so the wall is ready for paint or new wallpaper.

Can you remove wallpaper from a ceiling?

Yes. Ceilings take extra time and floor protection, but the process is the same.

Send a few photos and the rough size of the walls, and we will talk through prep, paper options and timing for your home.
