The short answer
A mural in Lighthouse Point should be measured after any wall repairs, printed with a few inches of bleed on every side, and hung panel by panel from a plumb line. We handle the measuring, prep and install so the image lines up across every seam.
A printed mural turns one wall into a single large image: a palm canopy, a soft watercolor of the sea, a vintage map of the coast, a botanical study or an abstract field of color. Unlike repeating wallpaper, a mural only works if every panel lands exactly where the artwork expects it. A quarter inch of drift at the first panel becomes a visible break by the last. PrimeWall Interior Solutions installs murals in Lighthouse Point homes from our base in Fort Lauderdale, roughly six miles south. Here is how we measure, order and hang a mural so the image reads as one continuous piece, plus a few local considerations for homes close to the Intracoastal.
Measuring comes before ordering
Most mural makers print to custom dimensions, so the numbers you send are the numbers you get. We measure width and height at several points, because walls in older ranch homes and in concrete-block construction are rarely perfectly square. The largest measurement becomes the order size, plus extra bleed so the image can be trimmed at the ceiling, floor and corners without losing anything important.
We also mark where the focal point of the artwork should sit. On a bedroom wall, you might want the horizon line above the headboard; in a living room, the main subject may need to clear a console or television. Telling the print shop those positions saves an awkward crop later.
- Measure after patching, not before
- Add bleed on all four edges, typically a few inches
- Note outlets, switches and vents that fall inside the image
- Decide what part of the picture must stay visible above furniture
Choosing a substrate for a waterfront home
Murals come on several backings: traditional paper, non-woven, vinyl and peel-and-stick film. In a Lighthouse Point house where the AC runs much of the year and humid air comes in from the dock or pool deck, non-woven and vinyl options are the steadiest. They do not expand much when pasted, which keeps the image aligned across seams.
Peel-and-stick murals can suit a rental unit or a child's room, but the adhesive is sensitive to heat and texture. On a smooth, primed wall away from direct sun they behave; on a hot exterior-facing wall they may lift at the edges during summer.
Getting the wall ready for a large image
A mural magnifies every flaw because the eye follows continuous lines in the artwork. We patch dents and old anchor holes, skim any orange-peel or knockdown texture flat, and sand until the wall reads smooth under a work light held at an angle. A tinted wallcovering primer evens out the color underneath so pale areas of the print do not pick up shadows from patched spots.
If an exterior wall shows signs of moisture after a summer storm, we deal with that first. Paste over damp drywall can bloom into mildew behind the print, and there is no clean way to fix that without removing the mural.
Hanging panel by panel
Panels are numbered, and we lay them out on the floor to confirm the order and the overlap or butt joint the maker specifies. The first panel goes up against a laser or plumb line, not the corner, because corners are seldom true. Each following panel is matched by eye to the artwork, smoothed from the center outward and trimmed with a fresh blade.
A single wall usually takes most of a day. Ceilings, stairwells and walls with windows inside the image take longer, since every cut around a frame has to keep the picture continuous.
Season, sun and care
From May through October, afternoon storms raise indoor humidity whenever doors open. We keep the AC running during and after installation so the paste cures at a steady temperature. Strong sun on a mural can fade inks over time; a wall that faces west across the water benefits from shades or window film.
Most murals on vinyl or coated non-woven can be wiped gently with a damp, soft cloth. We serve Lighthouse Point along with Hillsboro Beach, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach, Coconut Creek and Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
