The short answer
We strip old wallpaper in Wilton Manors homes, remove the adhesive, repair torn drywall and prime the walls. It suits anyone whose DIY attempt stalled, or anyone who wants to skip it altogether.
Plenty of Wilton Manors homeowners start removing old wallpaper on a Saturday morning and call for help by Saturday afternoon. One strip comes off cleanly, the next tears into confetti, and a third pulls the paper face right off the drywall. That is not a failure of effort; it is just how layered, aged or painted-over wallpaper behaves. PrimeWall Interior Solutions removes wallpaper in Wilton Manors homes, three miles from our Fort Lauderdale base, and leaves walls ready for their next finish.
When to stop a DIY attempt
Some removal is easy enough for a homeowner. Strippable papers peel away dry and leave little behind. But certain signs mean continuing on your own will probably create more repair work than it saves.
- Brown paper or gray gypsum is showing where the paper came off
- The paper only comes off in thumbnail-size pieces
- You find a second or third layer under the first
- Water runs off the surface instead of soaking in, which usually means paint or vinyl on top
- Dark spots or a damp smell appear behind bathroom paper
Already started? We can pick up where you left off
A half-stripped room is a common starting point for us. We assess what is left, what type of paper it is, and how much damage the wall has taken so far. Partly removed walls often need more repair than untouched ones, but nothing that cannot be fixed.
We are not here to judge. It is genuinely difficult to know how a wallpaper will behave until you try, and many papers were hung directly onto bare drywall with no primer, which nearly always means a messy removal no matter who does it.
Our approach to stubborn walls
First, protection. Floors are covered, baseboards are taped and electrical outlets in the work area are powered off and sealed. Removal is wet work.
Then we choose a method. Peelable vinyl faces are stripped first, exposing the backing. Backing and traditional paper are soaked with a warm stripping solution and given time to soften. Painted-over paper is perforated lightly so moisture can reach the adhesive. For the toughest sections, we use a steamer in short passes.
Scraping happens only once the paste lets go. A wide, flexible blade at a low angle lifts the paper without digging into the wall. Afterward, every wall is washed to remove adhesive residue, since any glue left behind interferes with paint.
Repair and priming
Torn drywall is the most common damage. Exposed brown paper must be sealed with a shellac or oil-based primer before patching; if joint compound goes straight onto it, the paper absorbs water and bubbles. Once sealed, damaged areas are skimmed, sanded and checked under a work light held flat to the wall.
Concrete block walls and older plaster surfaces respond differently and may need different fillers. The final step is a coat of primer suited to what comes next: a sealing primer for paint, or a wallcovering primer for new paper.
Planning the room's next look
Removal is a good moment to rethink the space. Once the walls are bare, you can see their real condition and decide whether paint, a fresh wallpaper or a single feature wall makes the most sense. Walls that needed heavy repair can still take wallpaper beautifully, because a properly primed and skimmed surface is often smoother than the original drywall.
If you are leaning toward paint, choose a sheen that suits the room. Flat and matte finishes hide small imperfections left from patching, while semi-gloss highlights them. Bathrooms still benefit from a moisture-resistant paint even if the wall underneath has been fully repaired.
If new wallpaper is the goal, tell us before we prime. A wallcovering primer and a paint primer are different products, and choosing the right one at this stage saves an extra coat later. We are glad to talk through options while the room is still empty.
Humidity and drying
Wilton Manors humidity slows drying, especially during the wet season from May through October. We keep the home closed with the AC running so walls dry thoroughly before priming. Priming over damp drywall traps moisture that can blister later.
If the plan is new wallpaper, we can schedule installation once the walls are ready, so the whole room is done in one coordinated project. We also remove wallpaper in Oakland Park, Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, Lauderdale Lakes, Lauderhill and Pompano Beach.
