The short answer
We identify what kind of wallpaper you have, remove it with the gentlest method that works, clean off the adhesive, and repair any torn drywall. The wall is then primed and ready for paint or a new wallcovering.
Old wallpaper comes off easily or it fights you for every inch, and you rarely know which until you start pulling. In Coconut Creek, we see both: dated borders and floral prints in condos bought from original owners, and builder-installed vinyl in bathrooms of single-family homes. PrimeWall Interior Solutions travels about seven miles northwest from Fort Lauderdale to strip wallcoverings in 33066 and 33073 and leave walls ready for paint or new paper. The goal is simple: get the old layer off without tearing up the drywall underneath.
First, figure out what is on the wall
Removal starts with a small test in a corner. How the paper reacts tells us how the rest of the job will go and how long it will take. Three types cover most of what we find in Coconut Creek homes.
- Strippable papers: the whole sheet lifts off dry, leaving little residue. These are the easiest.
- Peelable papers: the top layer pulls away but leaves a paper backing glued to the wall, which then needs soaking and scraping.
- Traditional or vinyl papers hung over unprimed drywall: the adhesive bonded to the drywall face paper, and aggressive scraping can tear it. These need the most patience.
Why the wall underneath matters
When wallpaper was hung decades ago, many installers skipped the primer. The paste soaked straight into the drywall's paper surface. Pull the wallpaper off and the drywall face can come with it, leaving brown, fuzzy patches. We work those areas slowly with warm water and a removal solution, scoring only as much as needed so we do not puncture the board.
Painted-over wallpaper is its own puzzle. Paint seals the surface, so water cannot reach the glue. We break through the paint layer carefully before soaking. Some homes also have paper hung directly on plaster over block walls; plaster handles soaking better than drywall but can crumble at old cracks.
Our removal sequence
Floors are covered with plastic and drop cloths, and outlets are switched off and taped since water is involved. We remove the top layer, soak the backing, and scrape at a low angle. Once the paper is gone, the wall is washed to remove leftover paste. That step is easy to skip, but adhesive residue will crackle under paint and keep new wallpaper from bonding well.
Next comes repair. We seal any exposed drywall paper with a shellac or oil-based primer so it does not bubble, then skim and sand gouges and old anchor holes. The last step is a primer suited to whatever finish you plan next.
Humidity and timing in South Florida
Removal involves a lot of water, and the walls need to dry before anything new goes on them. During the wet season, from May into October, air is heavy and drying can take longer, so we keep the AC running and may set up fans. In winter, the drier air helps walls dry faster. If you are planning to sell or bring in a painter right after, allow an extra day between removal and the next trade.
Getting the room ready before we arrive
A little preparation on your side shortens the job. Take down artwork, mirrors and shelves, and move small furniture, lamps and rugs out of the room. If the bathroom has a vanity mirror glued to the wall, tell us ahead of time, because paper behind it may need to stay or the mirror may need a separate removal. Towel bars and toilet paper holders usually come off and go back on once the walls are finished.
Think about what comes next, too. A wall headed for flat paint needs a smoother finish than one getting a textured grasscloth or a busy pattern. Telling us the plan helps us decide how much skim-coating is worth doing, so you are not paying for work that a new wallcovering would hide anyway, or skipping work that paint would reveal.
When removal turns up something else
Sometimes old wallpaper hides a problem. On exterior block walls or around bathroom fixtures, we occasionally find staining from past leaks or mildew where moisture was trapped behind vinyl. We stop and show you what we see before covering anything up, so you can decide whether a plumber or other trade should look at it.
We take removal jobs in Margate, North Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Deerfield Beach and Lighthouse Point too, and can schedule new installation right after removal if you want the room finished in one project.
