The short answer
Grasscloth can work well in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea homes if it goes on a dry, well-primed wall in an air-conditioned room away from direct spray and wet areas. Our Fort Lauderdale crew plans roll order, seam placement and adhesive so the natural weave looks intentional.
Grasscloth brings woven texture and a relaxed, natural mood that fits a home steps from the beach. It is also the most temperamental wallcovering we hang, and the air in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea makes that sensitivity matter. Sisal, jute, seagrass, arrowroot and paper weave are plant fibers glued to a paper backing; they react to moisture, stain if adhesive touches the face, and show color shifts from one roll to the next. PrimeWall Interior Solutions is based in Fort Lauderdale, about a mile west of town, and we approach every grasscloth job in a coastal condo or cottage with that reality in mind. Below is what we look at, what we recommend, and where we would talk you out of it.
Where natural fiber belongs in a seaside home
Bedrooms, dens, dining rooms and home offices are the safest homes for grasscloth near the coast. These rooms stay closed, the air conditioning holds a steady temperature, and nobody is splashing water nearby. A hallway that leads to the pool deck or a wall beside a balcony door that stays open on breezy afternoons is a different story; humid air and blowing sand will rough up the fibers over time.
Bathrooms with showers, laundry areas and kitchen backsplash zones are places we usually advise against real grasscloth. For those spots, vinyl products printed or embossed to look like woven fiber give a similar feel and can be wiped down.
Why the weather here changes the installation
This part of Broward County has no truly dry season. The stretch from May to October is hot, wet and sticky with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, while November through April is warmer and drier but still humid by most standards. Hurricane season, running June 1 through November 30, also brings power outages that can shut down AC for days.
All of that affects grasscloth. Fibers absorb moisture and swell, then shrink as the room dries, which can open seams if the adhesive and primer are wrong. We schedule installs when the home's AC is running reliably, let rolls acclimate in the room before hanging, and use a clear, low-moisture adhesive applied to the backing only.
- Rolls rest in the conditioned room before work begins
- Walls are checked with a moisture meter, especially exterior block walls
- A pigmented wallcovering primer keeps the backing from grabbing too fast
- Paste stays off the fiber face; any smear is a permanent mark
Seams, shading and roll order
Every grasscloth roll carries some variation because the fibers are harvested and dyed in batches. When panels are hung side by side, the edges often show a visible change in tone, which is part of the material's character. What we control is where those seams land and how the shading flows.
We number rolls, check them under your room's light before cutting, and sometimes reverse alternate panels to soften the color shift. On a feature wall we center the layout so seams fall symmetrically. In a full room we plan the starting point behind a door or in a low-visibility corner, so any final mismatch hides where the eye rarely goes.
Prep on coastal block and drywall walls
Many older homes and low-rise buildings near the shore have concrete block exterior walls with plaster or furred drywall inside. Salt-laden moisture can work into the block, and we have seen bubbling paint and efflorescence on those surfaces. We treat any active moisture issue as a stop sign; papering over it only traps the problem.
Once the wall is sound, we patch, sand smooth and prime. Grasscloth is thicker than standard paper and forgiving of small flaws, but deep gouges and ridges still cast shadows through the weave under raking light from a window.
Living with grasscloth after it is up
Dust it gently with a soft brush attachment and keep spray bottles away. If something splashes, blot rather than rub. Sunlight from large coastal windows will slowly fade natural dyes, so sheer curtains or UV-filtering film help on walls that get hours of direct sun.
We serve Lauderdale-by-the-Sea along with Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach, Lighthouse Point, Hillsboro Beach and other Broward communities.
