Wallpaper Stripping and Wall Repair in Deerfield Beach

The short answer

We test the paper, remove it layer by layer with the gentlest method that works, wash off the paste, and repair any damaged plaster or drywall. Walls are left primed and ready for paint or new wallpaper.

A lot of homes in Deerfield Beach carry wallpaper from an earlier era: seashell borders in a guest bath, a floral print in a kitchen, or vinyl that a previous owner painted over to save time. Taking it down is the first step to a fresh room, and how it comes down decides how much repair the wall needs afterward. PrimeWall Interior Solutions removes wallpaper in 33441 and 33442, about eight miles north of our Fort Lauderdale base, and leaves the surface clean, repaired and primed for whatever comes next.

What makes removal hard in older homes

Older Deerfield Beach houses can have more than one layer of wallpaper, sometimes with paint between them. Each layer adds a barrier that water and removal solution have to get through. We score painted surfaces lightly to open them, then soak and scrape, working one layer at a time.

The surface beneath matters just as much. Plaster over concrete block tends to tolerate soaking well, though old cracks can loosen. Drywall that was never primed before the original paper went up is more fragile; the paste may have bonded with the drywall's paper face, which can tear. We go slowly in those areas and change tools to reduce damage.

  • Multiple layers, sometimes with paint between them
  • Painted-over vinyl that blocks water from reaching the glue
  • Unprimed drywall where adhesive grabbed the face paper
  • Borders hung over a different paint finish than the wall below

Moisture behind the paper

Vinyl wallpaper does not let moisture pass through. On exterior block walls and in bathrooms, humidity can collect behind it over the years. When we remove it, we sometimes find mildew spots, staining or soft drywall. Near the coast, where salt air and steady humidity are part of daily life, this is more common in rooms that were not kept cool.

If we find something like that, we stop and show you before going further. Small surface mildew can often be cleaned and sealed. Soft or stained board around a tub or window may point to a leak worth having checked before the wall is closed back up with new paper or paint.

Step by step on a removal job

We lay down plastic and drop cloths, cut power to outlets in the work area and tape them, and remove switch plates, towel bars and other hardware. A test patch tells us how the paper will release. Then we strip the top layer, soak the backing, and scrape at a shallow angle to protect the wall.

Once the paper is gone, we wash the wall to remove leftover paste. Any torn drywall paper gets sealed with a stain-blocking primer so it will not bubble, then we skim, sand and prime. If you are painting, we aim for a finish smooth enough that the old seams will not ghost through.

Drying time and weather

Removal puts a lot of water on the walls. In the humid months between May and October, walls take longer to dry, so we keep the AC on and may use fans. During hurricane season, from June 1 to November 30, a storm with power outages can stall drying, and we will adjust the schedule if needed. In the drier winter months, the wall is often ready for primer sooner.

Doing it yourself versus calling us

A small strippable border in a dry room is a reasonable weekend project. Spray it lightly, peel it slowly, and wash the wall. The jobs that tend to go wrong are full bathrooms with vinyl over unprimed drywall, rooms with painted-over paper, and walls with several layers. Rental steamers and scoring tools can gouge drywall quickly, and the repair often takes longer than the removal.

If you have already started and hit a patch that will not budge, or the drywall surface is tearing, stop there. We can pick up where you left off, finish the removal and repair the torn areas.

Selling, renovating or just updating

Dated wallpaper is one of the first things buyers notice, and many sellers in Deerfield Beach remove it before listing. Others are updating a condo they just bought or preparing for a kitchen or bath remodel. We can stop at a primed wall for your painter, or move straight into installing new wallpaper. We also handle removal in Lighthouse Point, Hillsboro Beach, Coconut Creek, Pompano Beach and Margate.

How a visit goes

  1. Honest prep advice

If a wall needs skim coating, crack repair or a moisture check first, we tell you before the job starts, not halfway through it.

  2. Pattern planned on purpose

We decide where the first strip lands so the motif centers on a focal point and the least visible seam ends up in a corner.

  3. Climate-aware materials

We help you pick papers and adhesives suited to humid bathrooms, salty coastal air and rooms where the AC cycles all day.

FAQ

Common questions

Don’t see your question? Call (561) 823-3201 and we’ll talk it through.

Can painted-over wallpaper be removed?

Yes. We score the paint so water can reach the glue, then soak and scrape. It takes longer than unpainted paper.

What if there are several layers?

We remove them one at a time. Multiple layers add time but come off with the same careful method.

Will the walls be ready to paint?

Yes. We wash off adhesive, repair damage and prime so paint goes on smoothly.

Do you remove wallpaper in condos?

Yes. We follow building rules for access and hours, and protect floors and common areas.

What if you find mold behind the wallpaper?

We stop and show you. Light surface mildew can be cleaned; larger issues may need another trade first.
